ENERGY EFFICIENCY - BTU

Global warming, climate change, carbon footprint – these are all popular catch phrases in today’s culture. The Be Green in Bryan initiatives encompass many areas that are important to our citizens and our community. Energy efficiency is one specific area that BTU has been focusing on for many years and we have recently expanded a number of programs for both residential and commercial customers.

Energy efficiency can be as easy as being more diligent about turning off lights when you leave a room or as complex as installing a Photovoltaic Solar Energy System. BTU has a long history of being a progressive municipal utility and our diverse programs offer our customers a wide range of ways that they can save on their energy costs and help the environment at the same time. In addition to the programs highlighted on this website, BTU is also working on a landfill methane gas recovery project to capture gas from our local landfill and use it for fuel to generate electricity.

Energy efficiency and conservation programs benefit our community and utility in many ways. The more individuals and businesses reduce their energy usage, the less electricity BTU has to generate in order to meet customer needs. This reduces our dependence on fossil fuels and translates into less pollution and cheaper power overall.

It has been recognized that programs such as these can be an economic development opportunity for the local community through workforce development, new jobs, and tax revenues. Unlike sending local utility dollars outside the service area through the purchase of renewable energy credits or blocks of renewable power, we have seen that viable and robust energy efficiency and conservation programs bring their cumulative benefit to the doorsteps of the community where it is located.

These programs are a vital part of our commitment to being an active and responsible participant in the community through efficient use of resources.
