WASTE REDUCTION

Current Efforts:

Drive-In Recycling Center
Since 1996, the City of Bryan’s Drive-In Recycling Center has provided Brazos Valley residents and businesses the opportunity to recycle a wide variety of items. In FY 2007, the Recycling Center processed over 800 tons of recyclable goods. For a list of Items collected at the site, click here.

“In-House” Pick Up
All City offices are supplied with recycling bins to collect their recyclable materials. The materials are collected by City staff once per week and processed at the Drive-In Recycling Center.

White Goods Recycling
The City of Bryan also has a white goods recycling program in place. White goods are large appliances such as air conditioners, dishwashers, freezers, refrigerators, water heaters, and clothes washers and dryers. The City first picks them up, safely removes any parts which may be contaminated with Freon, and then scraps the remainder of the unit.

Compost Facility
The City of Bryan opened the doors to environmental awareness and waste reduction with the debut of the Compost Facility on November 12, 1993.

The Bryan Compost Facility is one of only a handful of Bio-Solid composting facilities within the entire state, and is regulated by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). The Compost Facility is a Type V Solid Waste Facility permitted with the State of Texas as # 42003.

The Compost Facility primarily accepts brush and yard waste from the Cities of Bryan and College Station as well as Texas A&M University and surrounding communities. Bio-Solids from the City of Bryan wastewater treatment facilities are also accepted along with Bio-Solids from other small local communities. Occasionally paper wastes in the form of phone books are collected by the City’s drop off recycling program and are accepted at our facility for processing. These wastes are combined and processed on-site to produce a beneficial soil amendment that is sold back to the residents and businesses of the Brazos Valley.

In FY 07 the Compost Facility diverted over 17,000 tons of brush and Bio-Solids from entering our local landfill and sold over 5,000 tons of compost.

Household Hazardous Waste Collection
The Cities of Bryan and College Station partner with the Brazos Valley Solid Waste Agency (BVSWMA) to host a bi-annual event which allows all citizens in our area the opportunity to dispose, free of charge, household hazardous wastes, cleaners, aerosols, batteries, herbicides, pesticides and many other items.

Since the program began in 1994, over 17,188 people have disposed of more than 763,066 pounds of hazardous waste and 112 tons of computers. In May 2003 the first E-waste collection was held and almost 15,000 pounds of computers, monitors and keyboards were collected.
