Community Development Services receives, allocates and administers Community
Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnership Program funding
in ways beneficial to Bryan citizens and to the entire community. The funds are
distributed according to guidelines established by the US Department of Housing
and Urban Development. We are federally funded and are required to designate at
least 70% of the funding to directly benefit low and moderate income persons.
Community Development Services strives to meet the following goals:
Create jobs for low-income and moderate-income persons
Provide essential neighborhood services in low-income neighborhoods
Develop affordable housing opportunities
Eliminate slum or blight
Meet an urgent community development need.
Funds are used to provide funding and technical assistance to non-profit
organizations for a variety of public services and public facility projects.
Each year, a joint relief funding process conducted by the Joint Relief Funding
Committee of the cities of Bryan and College Station provides operational
funding to 12 local agencies each year. Funding for other non-profit
organizations and public facilities is provided through a public hearing
process. The Community Development Advisory Committee, comprised of volunteer
citizens, holds these public hearings to determine funding recommendations to
the Bryan City Council. We also administer homeowner assistance programs and
economic development programs. Special projects, such as new low and moderate
income housing subdivisions and construction of new or replacement
infrastructure to facilitate housing development are also frequently undertaken.
