Citizen Police Academy
It is that time of year again. Maybe you have been through this academy, know someone who would like to go, or have heard about it and want to go yourself. But, twice a year we offer citizens a chance to partner with the Bryan Police Department and learn about what we do, how we do it, and see firsthand how it is done. The Bryan Police Department offers the citizens of Bryan the chance to see the inner workings of their police department through the Citizenís Police Academy.
The 10-week CPA course meets one night each week from 6:30 pm until 9:30 pm. Classes are held at the Bryan Police Department. Topics covered in the CPA class include overviews of the Bryan Police Department's organization and structure, information on cadet recruiting and training, introductions to the various divisions of BPD and their responsibilities (such as Criminal Investigations, Traffic, and Narcotics), plus hands-on workshops (such as building searches, simulated traffic stops, and crime scene). Instructors are drawn from the Police Department staff, from officers currently assigned to specific BPD divisions, from non-BPD law enforcement and legal agencies. CPA class members are also given an opportunity to observe police patrol work through a Ride-Along experience for one 12-hour shift with a patrol officer.
The Spanish Citizen Police Academy 15th Class will meet every Monday starting February 7, 2011. For more information, contact Margot Avila at (979) 209-5533.
The English Citizen Police Academy 44th Class will meet every Thursday starting February 10, 2011. For more information, contact Vonda Pope at (979) 209-5310.
An application may also be obtained from the Bryan Police Department website at www.bryantxpolice.com and is under the volunteer tab. Or come into the Police Department lobby and ask for an application. It takes only a couple of minutes to fill out.
Upon graduating from the CPA, citizens will have the chance to join the Bryan Citizen Police Academy Alumni Association. CPAAA members can continue to work with the police department as volunteers in areas and functions throughout the department.
