Jan. 19 Road Closure – Fatality Accident Investigation
On Wednesday January 19, 2010 at 8:00 am, there will be some lane closures in the 10000 block of State Highway 30 near Nunn Jones Road as the Bryan Police Department investigates a fatality accident. The major accident occurred on Sunday January 16, 2010 at 1:20 pm in the 10000 block of State Highway 30 during inclement weather. The accident occurred when a truck crossed the center line and collided with a two door sedan. All persons in the vehicles were transported to the hospital where a 9 year old male passenger later died from injuries sustained in the accident.
The eastbound lanes and center turn lane will be closed to traffic as the Traffic Safety Unit investigates the accident location and diagrams the scene. All traffic will be diverted to the westbound lanes. Eastbound and Westbound traffic will be down to one lane each. Please expect delays on this roadway and drive cautiously. Officers will be working on foot where the accident occurred, so drive slowly in the area. Lane closures are expected to last until 1:00 pm.
The Bryan Police Department would like to remind all motorists that Texas enacted the Move Over Law in September of 2003. The law requires drivers nearing stopped emergency vehicles, with lights activated, to either slow down or change lanes.
The “Move Over Law” requires drivers to take the following actions.
• Vacate the lane closest to the emergency vehicle if the highway has two or more lanes traveling the direction of the emergency vehicle.
• Slow to a speed not more than 20 mph less than the posted speed limit when the posted speed limit is 25 mph or more.
• Slow to a speed not more than 5 mph when the posted speed limit is less than 25 mph.
Emergency vehicles include police, emergency medical service and fire vehicles.
A violation is punishable by a maximum fine of $200. If the violation results in property damage, the maximum fine increases to $500. If the violation results in bodily injury, the offense is enhanced to a Class B misdemeanor.
