Road Closure - Fatality Accident Investigation
On Thursday March 24, 2011, the Bryan Police Department will be conducting a follow up investigation of a fatality accident that occurred on March 18, 2011. Expect lane closures on the North Earl Rudder Freeway frontage road near Tabor Road. The frontage road just south of the Tabor Road exit will be down to one lane on the northbound side of the highway. The exit ramp will be open along with the outside lane of the frontage road. These lanes closures will start at 8:00 am and will last until about 12:00 pm. The fatality accident involved a motorcyclist that left the roadway on the northbound frontage road just before Tabor Road and was later found deceased on the side of the road. The investigation is still ongoing.
Please use caution when traveling through this area especially if you are exiting the freeway at Tabor Road. Officers will be in the area working on foot while wearing orange vests. These officers will be in and out of traffic as they investigate, so please be careful passing through the area and slow down.
The Bryan Police Department would like to remind all motorists that Texas enacted the Move Over Law in September of 2003. The law requires drivers nearing stopped emergency vehicles, with lights activated, to either slow down or change lanes.
The “Move Over Law” requires drivers to take the following actions.
• Vacate the lane closest to the emergency vehicle if the highway has two or more lanes traveling the direction of the emergency vehicle.
• Slow to a speed not more than 20 mph less than the posted speed limit when the posted speed limit is 25 mph or more.
• Slow to a speed not more than 5 mph when the posted speed limit is less than 25 mph.
Emergency vehicles include police, emergency medical service and fire vehicles.
A violation is punishable by a maximum fine of $200. If the violation results in property damage, the maximum fine increases to $500. If the violation results in bodily injury, the offense is enhanced to a Class B misdemeanor.
