Road Closure – Major Accident
On Friday October 7, 2011 starting at 12:00 pm, the southbound lanes of 1000 block of N. Earl Rudder / State Highway 6 will be closed until approximately 2:00 pm due to a major accident involving an eighteen wheeler which left the roadway because of equipment failure. The highway southbound lanes will be closed between Old Reliance Rd and FM 158 / Booneville Rd. until 1:00 pm. All traffic will be diverted to the Old Reliance Rd. exit to travel southbound on the frontage road to avoid the work area as workers attempt to clear the roadway.
The major accident occurred on Friday October 7, 2011 at 5:38 am, in the 1000 block of N. Earl Rudder. The vehicle came to rest in the median on its side after colliding with another vehicle at the same location traveling southbound in the curb lane, no one was seriously injured, and two drivers were transported to St. Joseph Hospital as a precaution. Please expect delays on this roadway and drive cautiously. Traffic reader boards will be working to advise drivers of the accident location, so drive slowly in the area. Lane closures are expected to last until 1:00 pm.
The Bryan Police Department would like to remind all motorists that Texas enacted the Move Over Law in September of 2003. The law requires drivers nearing stopped emergency vehicles, with lights activated, to either slow down or change lanes.
The “Move Over Law” requires drivers to take the following actions.
· Vacate the lane closest to the emergency vehicle if the highway has two or more lanes traveling the direction of the emergency vehicle.
· Slow to a speed not more than 20 mph less than the posted speed limit when the posted speed limit is 25 mph or more.
· Slow to a speed not more than 5 mph when the posted speed limit is less than 25 mph.
Emergency vehicles include police, emergency medical service and fire vehicles.
A violation is punishable by a maximum fine of $200. If the violation results in property damage, the maximum fine increases to $500. If the violation results in bodily injury, the offense is enhanced to a Class B misdemeanor.
