Public meeting scheduled for Bryan flood issues
The City of Bryan is interested in obtaining information about flooding problems within the City of Bryan or suggestions for improvements to the drainage system.
The City will hold two public meetings scheduled for Tuesday, November 15 and Monday, December 5. Both meetings will begin at 6:30pm in the Basement Training Room of the Municipal Office Building (300 S. Texas Ave., Bryan). The meetings will include a short presentation followed by time to receive feedback from attendees. The information gathered will be used in the process to update the Flood Mitigation Plan maintained by the City of Bryan.
The City of Bryan is member of the Community Rating System (CRS). As part of our participation in the CRS, the City developed a Flood Mitigation Plan five years ago as part of the last Comprehensive Plan Update. This was the City’s first Flood Mitigation Plan and it is required that it be updated every 5 years.
The CRS Program (administered for FEMA by the Insurance Service Office) was created to recognize communities where floodplain management standards exceed the minimum federal requirements and, in exchange, policyholders receive discounts on their flood insurance premiums. Recently the City’s rating improved to a Class 6 rating, which allows for a 20% reduction on flood insurance premiums if you are located within the 100 year floodplain and a 10% reduction on flood insurance premiums if you are located outside of the 100 year floodplain. That is an increase from the 15% / 5% savings the City of Bryan had at a Class 7. The 10% reduction for premiums outside the 100 year floodplain is the best discount offered through the CRS program, it is the same for Classes 1 through 6.
