Bryan to host ribbon-cutting for Bryan Ave./Beck St. Reconstruction Project
The public is invited to join the City of Bryan to celebrate the completion of the Bryan Avenue/Beck Street reconstruction project with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, November 18 at 4:30 p.m.
The ceremony will be held near the intersection of Bryan Avenue and 29th Street in front of the new Downtown Bryan welcome sign (see attached photo). The retaining wall is just west of the railroad tracks near Downtown’s Gloria Stephan Sale Park.
The $3.6 million Bryan Avenue and Beck Street Reconstruction Project began in September of 2009 and was completed this summer. The project removed and replaced the pavement on Bryan Avenue from 28th to Sims and on Beck Street from Sims to Anson.
Bryan Avenue was reconstructed, 8-foot sidewalks were installed, antique street lights were purchased and provided by BTU and decorative paver inlays were placed in several of the intersections of the project.
Beck Street was also reconstructed and 6-foot sidewalks were installed along one side of the street.
The project also replaced water and sewer lines along Bryan and Beck, as well as a sewer line along 31st Street. During construction, crews replaced an additional 1000 feet of sewer and 500 feet of water lines at tie-in locations to improve the infrastructure of the area. New curb and gutter was installed plus additional storm sewer was placed to improve street drainage within the project limits.
As part of this contract, underground conduits were installed to facilitate the relocation of existing overhead electric and communication wires underground along Bryan Avenue from Sims to 28th Street.
A retaining wall was constructed along Bryan Avenue between 28th and 29th Streets and a circular walkway at the corner of Bryan and Sims in order to provide focal point locations which provide future potential landscaping opportunities.
In addition to replacing utility infrastructure the pavement reconstruction and pedestrian improvements have improved the usefulness and appearance of a collector street which serves as a corridor and major gateway from Harvey Mitchell Parkway to Downtown Bryan.
