Press Release Friday, July 27, 2012Citizen’s Police Academy - Classes Starting
It’s that time of year again when the Bryan Police Department recruits citizens for class. Do you know someone who would like to join our Citizen’s Police Academy or have you been thinking about it yourself? Now is the time to join. Twice a year the BPD offers citizens a chance to learn about what they do and see firsthand how it is done. The Bryan Police Department offers the citizens of Bryan the chance to see the inner workings of their police department through the Citizen’s Police Academy and it’s FREE. The 10-week CPA course meets one night each week from 6:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. Classes are held at the Bryan Police Department. Topics covered in the CPA class include overviews of the Bryan Police Department's organization and structure, information on cadet recruiting and training, introductions to the various divisions of the BPD and their responsibilities (such as Criminal Investigations, Traffic Safety, and Narcotics). Plus, there will be hands-on workshops such as building searches, simulated traffic stops, and crime scenes. Instructors are drawn from the Police Department staff and other criminal justice agencies. CPA class members are also given an opportunity to do a Ride-Along experience with a patrol officer on the streets. The 18th Spanish Language Citizen’s Police Academy Class will meet every Monday starting August 6, 2012. For more information, contact Margot Avila at (979) 209-5533. The 47th English Language Citizen’s Police Academy Class will meet every Thursday starting August 9, 2012. For more information, contact Vonda Pope at (979) 209-5310. An application may also be obtained from the Bryan Police Department website at www.bryantxpolice.com, just click the CPA logo (application also attached). Interested citizens can also visit the Police Department lobby and ask for an application. It takes only a couple of minutes to fill out. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older. Upon graduating from the CPA, citizens will have the chance to join the Bryan Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Association. CPAAA members can continue to work with the police department as volunteers in areas and functions throughout the department. This is a great chance to learn more about your law enforcement community and partner with your local police department.
