Operation Stop Arm 2
On Monday, December 8, 2008, The Bryan Police Department’s Traffic Safety Unit in conjunction with the Neighborhood Enforcement Team and Bryan ISD Transportation Division performed “Operation Stop Arm 2”. This is the second operation this year conducted by the Bryan Police that targets drivers who violate the stop arm signals on school buses loading and unloading children by passing them on public highways. The operation ran during the AM bus routes and the PM bus routes.
Bryan Police Neighborhood Enforcement Team Officers rode on Bryan school buses Monday morning and afternoon in order to witness violations first hand from the bus driver’s point of view. Traffic Safety Unit Officers followed from a safe distance in order to initiate traffic stops on violators.
Number of Traffic stops: 9
Number of Citations issued: 10
Number of BUS citations: 6
Number of unrelated citations: 4
The goal of the operation was to educate drivers about the dangers of passing a school bus while children are boarding and exiting. The safety of the children of our community is the upmost importance. The Bryan Police Department would like to remind citizens that:
An operator of a motor vehicle on a highway that is approaching a school bus, from either direction, that is stopped on the highway to receive or discharge a student shall stop before reaching the school bus when the bus is operating a visual signal. The operator of the vehicle can not proceed until the school bus resumes motion, the operator is signaled by the bus driver to proceed, or the visual signal is not longer activated.
An offense is a misdemeanor punishable by a fine of not less than $200 or more than $1,000. It is a Class A Misdemeanor if the person causes serious bodily injury to another.
It is through the partnerships with other entities within the city of Bryan that we are able to make Bryan the safest City in the Great State of Texas.
