SAM RAYBURN TRAFFIC
The Bryan Police Department would like to inform the citizens of Bryan about recent traffic concerns in front of Sam Rayburn Middle School and changes in traffic patterns that are taking place to assist with traffic flow.
Due to recent construction in the 1100 block of N. Earl Rudder freeway on the east frontage road (north bound), traffic has severely increased. The entrance and exit ramps on east side frontage road in front of the school are closed for construction. All traffic must pass in front of the school before entering the HWY 6 bypass after Old Reliance/E. Martin Luther King overpass.
This increase in traffic has created a greater than normal congestion issue during Sam Rayburnís afternoon school release and pick up of students. The main times of concern are between 3:00 pm and 4:15 pm Monday through Friday. Parentís vehicles and school buses overflow on to the frontage road waiting to pick up children at this peak time. The school zone speed limit in the afternoon is 35 mph. With the increased traffic flow due to construction, it is creating a safety hazard to citizens.
The Bryan Police Department, in cooperation with Bryan ISD, will be using police officers and cones to close the outside frontage road lane in front of the school. This lane of the roadway will be closed off to prevent parking in front of the school and allow for a protected lane for vehicles and buses to pull out on to the roadway. It is illegal to stop, stand, or park on the frontage road to pickup or discharge passengers. The changes will expedite the flow of vehicles in and out of the school as they pick up children. This will also prevent long periods of congestion on the frontage road. The police presence will also help with the speeding vehicles adhering to the school zone speed limit.
The lane closure will only be during the above listed times and/or special events at the school that might require such closures. This change in traffic flow is projected through the construction period on the frontage road.
The Bryan Police Department encourages all motorists to be aware of these changes, avoid the area at this time if possible, and drive courteously and safely through the area. The Bryan Police Departmentís partnership with Bryan ISD and the public will bring the city of Bryan one step closer to the safest city in the Great State of Texas.
