Arson suspect apprehended
Fire Department News
On June 15, 2008, Bryan firefighters responded to residential and automobile fires at 4608 North Texas Avenue. Fire investigators determined the cause to be arson for both fires and the suspect was identified to be Jerry Lee Thayer.
Thayer had been a resident of the home on North Texas Avenue at the time the crimes were committed. On June 23, 2008, a warrant was obtained for his arrest. When Thayer failed to turn himself into authorities, a lengthy manhunt across many states and Mexico ensued.
Through the coordinated efforts of Bryan Fire Department and various local, state and federal agencies, Thayer was successfully apprehended following his surrender to the Texas Rangers on the Texas/Mexico border on February 28, 2009.
Thayer remains in the Brazos County Jail without bond awaiting trial. He was on parole from Nevada for armed robbery when this incident occurred.
The Bryan Fire Department would like to thank all the assisting agencies and their personnel for their support in the apprehension of Thayer, especially The Brazos County Sheriff’s Office and The Bryan Police Department.
