Beck Street to temporarily close Tuesday
On Tuesday, March 24, from 2 to 5 p.m., the City of Bryan will be closing Beck Street between F.M. 2818 (Harvey Mitchell Parkway) and Suncrest Street / Silkwood Drive. The closure is to allow a team of engineers and other scientific experts – part of the American Society for Testing and Materials – to evaluate pavement markings on Beck Street.
The group is developing new standardized test procedures for how public agencies can measure the reflectivity of pavement markings at night during rainy conditions in order to make roadways safer for public travel. The Texas Transportation Institute at Texas A&M University has been involved in supporting this new pavement marking test procedure, including developing prototype equipment to measure the reflectivity of pavement markings. The pavement marking testing on Beck Street on Tuesday will be supplemented with further nighttime testing this week on a closed course at the Texas A&M Riverside Campus. The ASTM group hopes to obtain the necessary data from the testing to prepare a national standardized procedure that will then be voted upon by the ASTM members for approval. If approved, agencies nationwide would be able to use the test procedure to evaluate their pavement markings for nighttime, wet-weather performance.
Beck Street was chosen because the City of Bryan completed construction of this road in 2008 and the pavement markings have been in place for approximately one year, which was part of the criteria for the ASTM group.
During the closure of Beck Street, detours will be in place to safely guide motorists around the work area. Motorists should observe all work zone warning signs and use caution while traveling near this area.
