Bryan aquatics program named top in state, nation
The Bryan Aquatic Center was named one of the top aquatic programs in the United States, officials with the U.S. Water Fitness Association announced recently.
Bryanís program was ranked first in the state and seventh in the nation. It was one of only three programs in Texas to be recognized.
The Bryan Aquatic Center was built in 1984 and has seen many changes over the past 25 years, including the addition of a 17- foot water slide, and bulk head to convert the eight 50-meter lanes into 16 lap lanes.
The Bryan Aquatic Center offers many programs including swim lessons, swim team, diving instructions and water aerobics/lap swimming/water walking opportunities for fitness. Special events include Dive-In Movies, Teen Nights, Family Days, Aquablast (Fourth of July Celebration), and Junior Guard. The staff at the Aquatic Center also regularly participates in lifeguard competitions and scored second place in a recent competition.
In 2008, the Aquatic Center had more than 1,200 swim lesson participants. The Bryan Barracudas, a seasonal competitive swim team, had 78 members last year and is gearing up to begin the 2009 season.
The Aquatic Centerís water aerobics program is continually evolving to meet the needs of patrons. A morning class for a high-intensity work out, an arthritis class, a beginnerís class and a general fitness class are offered. Lap swimming at Bryan Aquatic Center is a favorite Ė many members have been swimming laps at the center since the pool opened in 1984. Lap swimmers participate in the Solar/Polar Bear mile tracking program. Any swimmer who reaches 50-plus miles in a season is rewarded with a party and prizes.
The Bryan Aquatic Center will celebrate its 25th birthday this year during Aquablast on July 4.
