Press Release Monday, July 20, 2009Bryan Fire Department to host marrow drive
The Bryan Fire Department will host a marrow drive from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, July 24, at 300 William Joel Bryan Parkway.
To contribute to the national marrow registry, a donor must be between the ages of 18 and 60, meet health and weight requirements, complete a registration form and consent to a swab of cheek cells so tissue type can be identified. A sample of bone marrow is not required.
It is estimated that a marrow or blood cell transplant could annually benefit more than 10,000 children and adults with life-threatening disease. The “Be The Match” registry, operated by the National Marrow Donor Program, is an international registry of volunteers who would be willing to consider donating blood stem cells or marrow to patients in need of a transplant. Since its inception in 1987, the National Marrow Donor Program has facilitated more than 33,000 marrow or blood cell transplants.
