City leaders to promote financial stability program
Bryan Mayor Mark Conlee, Councilmember Ann Horton and Neighborhood/Youth Services Manager Ronnie Jackson are teaming up with the National League of Cities, the FDIC, the Federal Reserve, the Office of Comptroller of Currency and area non-profit organizations such as United Way of the Brazos Valley, Project Unity and Family Solutions, on Wednesday, Sept. 30, to host a meeting with potential financial partners for the City’s “Bank on It” program.
Bank on It is an initiative that will connect unbanked residents of Bryan to mainstream financial services and institutions to help provide financial security to many local families. The meeting will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Bryan Municipal Court Building, 401 S. Tabor Ave. in Bryan.
“We’re thrilled that financial services leaders of our community are interested in learning about reaching out to the estimated 2,500-plus unbanked residents of Bryan and help them access mainstream financial services and products,” Jackson said.
Bank On It is an effort to bring together banks, credit unions, financial services providers, government, private sector, community organizations and nonprofits to educate and support more people into the financial mainstream.
“With the technical assistance provided by the National League of Cities and the support of the regulatory agencies of the financial services industry, Bryan is poised for a successful launch of its Bank On It initiative,” said Councilmember Horton.
Establishing a relationship with a mainstream financial institution, such as a bank or credit union, can be a crucial first step to provide families with opportunities to save, access affordable credit and keep more of their hard-earned money by not paying check cashing fees just to get access to it. Families with access to basic financial products are more likely to build financial assets, and are less likely to utilize fringe financial services that charge high fees and interest rates.
