Bryan selected to showcase at national conference
The City of Bryan was recently selected to showcase its Downtown Improvement Program at the National League of Cities’ annual Congress of Cities and Exposition on Nov. 10-14 in San Antonio.
Celebrating 33 innovative city programs, the 2009 City Showcase offers representatives from across the country an opportunity to present new and noteworthy ideas to more than 2,500 conference participants.
The Downtown Improvement Program is an innovative effort to help spur the rehabilitation of dilapidated properties within Downtown Bryan. It provides a matching grant to improve buildings and sites located within the eligible area.
“More than 45 properties have participated in the program, improving the appearance of the district and the City’s image as a whole,” said Downtown Project Planner Julie Fulgham. “We’re seeing our business owners make upgrades and repairs to their buildings that they wouldn’t be able to do without this program.”
Community and economic development, sustainability, public safety, recreation, and youth programs are among the variety of municipal programs featured in the 2009 City Showcase. Exhibits include municipalities of all sizes and geographic region.
As one of 25 cities represented, Bryan will have an opportunity to provide in-depth information on how its program was planned and implemented.
The National League of Cities is the nation’s oldest and largest organization devoted to strengthening and promoting cities as centers of opportunity, leadership and governance. NLC is a resource and advocate for 19,000 cities, towns and villages, representing more than 218 million Americans.
