Milam Elementary incident today
Today at Milam Elementary, a 9-year-old fourth grader brought an unloaded .25 caliber handgun to the school in a backpack. The student told classmates he wanted to show the gun to friends. Another student reported the incident to a teacher, who immediately removed the fourth grader and the backpack from the classroom.
Bryan Police are investigating the incident.
Possessing a firearm on school property is a Level 5 Expellable Offense. According to the Texas Education Code, when a student under the age of ten engages in behavior considered to be expellable, the student will not be expelled, but will be placed in a District Alternative Education Program (DAEP). The length of DAEP placement is at the discretion of the campus principal and can range from 15 days to the remainder of the school year.
