Don’t call 9-1-1 unless it is a real emergency
The Bryan Police Department would like to remind the public not to call 9-1-1 unless it is a real emergency. Calling 9-1-1 for non-emergency calls uses valuable resources which may delay responding to emergency calls. Unfortunately some citizens call 9-1-1 daily for reasons that are not necessarily real emergencies. Over the past few years, the public has dialed 9-1-1 to ask for the correct date and time, directions, and tech support for when they lock themselves out of their phones. Surprisingly they have even called to find out who won the Presidential election. 9-1-1 has at times been confused with 4-1-1 which is directory assistance for the US and Canada.
A big problem 9-1-1 operator’s face is children playing with old cell phones. All cell phones will make 9-1-1 calls with or without service. 9-1-1 staff request parent refrain from allowing children to play with a real cell phone unless the batteries are taken out.
There is an overload of calls into the dispatch office when the electricity is out. The public should call their local utility company for power outage. Bryan Texas Utilities’ phone number is 979-822-3777. College Station Utilities’ phone number is 979-764-3638. Calling 9-1-1 for power outages should be done only if there is a medical reason that requires electricity or there is an actual emergency.
Calling 9-1-1 is for emergencies purposes only. A 9-1-1 call is the highest priority to communications personnel who, at times, have to juggle phone calls with radio traffic from public safety personnel.
The non-emergency number for Bryan Police Department and Brazos County Sheriff’s Office is 979-361-3888. The non-emergency phone number to College Station Police Department is 979-764-3600.
