City requests citizen input for federal grant programs
A citizen needs survey is now online to collect data from low and moderate-income citizens, or those residing in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods. The data will contribute to determining goals and objectives for the use of federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnerships Grant (HOME) funds for the upcoming 2010-2014 Consolidated Plan period.
The City of Bryan receives approximately $1.4 million per year in federal Community Development funding, which can be used to address various needs for eligible projects, including housing rehabilitation, homebuyer assistance, housing development, public facilities, infrastructure, economic development, elimination of blighted structures and the funding of non-profit Community Housing Development Corporations and non-profit public service agencies.
The Consolidated Plan will be adopted by the City Council in July for submission to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) in August. A series of six public meetings, hosted by the Community Development Advisory Committee, also will be held to solicit citizen input.
The next Community Development Advisory Committee meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, March 11, at the North Bryan Community Center.
“We would like to encourage low- and moderate-income residents to participate in this planning process by completing the survey or attending a public meeting so that we can best identify their needs,” said Alsie Bond, manager of the Community Development Services Department. “Our goal is to arrive at a strategic plan which we can aggressively implement over the next five years in order to make a noticeable, positive impact in the lives, homes and neighborhoods of the City’s low- and moderate-income citizens.”
The survey document (in English and Spanish) and meeting schedule may be downloaded online from the Community Development Services Department website at http://www.bryantx.gov/departments/?name=community
