Bryan Police Officer and Bryan Firefighter Honored
On May 13, 2010, The 100 Club, Inc. honored area police officers and firefighters at the 56th Annual Heroes Awards Banquet “Honoring The Honorable”. At the banquet Bryan Police Officer Adam Brooks was awarded one of 22 Officer of the Year awards and Bryan Fire Department Apparatus Operator Eric Wallace received one of eight Firefighter of the Year awards.
Officer Brooks was nominated for Officer of the Year after an incident on April 25, 2009, when the Bryan Police Department received a report of a possible drowning of a 10-month old infant in a bathtub. Officer Brooks responded to the call and arrived before medics. He took the infant and went back into the residence where he laid the infant on the floor and began CPR until medics arrived and took the child to St. Joseph’s Hospital. Bryan Medics attribute Officers Brooks’ initial action on scene as critical to insuring the survival of the infant.
Wallace received his honor as a result of actions he took late in 2009. Wallace was driving home from his shift when he noticed smoke and then saw a house on fire. He stopped and assessed the scene where he learned the homeowner was still inside the burning residence. Without regard for his personal safety, Wallace entered the burning building, found the man who was down and too weak to get out of the house. Wallace then removed him from the inferno which saved the victim's life.
The 100 Club was started in 1953 by a small group of civic-minded, public-spirited people who recognized the need for lending substantial support to the morale of our peace officers. The purpose of the organization is to provide assistance to families of peace officers and firefighters who are killed in the line of duty, and to provide agencies with equipment and educational opportunities.
Today, The 100 Club, Inc. has over 29,000 members and has provided over 33 million dollars towards firefighters and police officers, either through benefits to families killed in the line of duty, education, or equipment.
