Guns and Hoses Blood Drive a Success
On Wednesday September 1, 2010, the Bryan Police Department and the Bryan Fire Department worked with the Blood Center of the Brazos Valley for the Guns and Hoses Blood Drive. The blood drive is a friendly competition between the two city departments to see who could raise the most donations for the local blood bank. The fun wager was supported by the Chiefs from the Police and Fire Department. They even went so far as to agree to wash an opposing department’s emergency vehicle of choice if they lost the competition.
The blood drive was hosted at City Hall and ran from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm. There were a total of 43 people who came to give blood. Those people were made up of officers, fire fighters, city employees, family members of employees, and citizens. The Police Department won the competition with the most donations and the Blood Center of the Brazos Valley ended up with over 31 units of blood. Our goal was a minimum of 25 donations and we consider the event a great success.
All in good spirit, the Fire Department stood by their word and will be washing a Bryan Police car this Friday, September 3, at 10:00 am. The event will take place at the Central Fire Station in Downtown Bryan. All are welcome to come and see the smiles on everyone’s faces as the fire department readies this patrol car for duty on the streets.
The purpose of the competition was to give back to the community and educate the public of the importance of giving blood. Each blood unit given can save up to three lives. The blood raised in this blood drive will stay here locally for our community for those who need it.
