Traffic Safety Officer Recognized
The Bryan Police Department is proud to recognize Officer William Challis, a motorcycle officer assigned to the Traffic Safety Unit, for completing a rigorous course of study and becoming a certified Drug Recognition Expert or “DRE.”
A DRE is an officer that has been educated in recognizing and identifying different drugs and how they affect the human body. Whether the drugs are illegal or prescribed by a doctor, they can cause impairment in a person’s body; especially someone who is operating a motor vehicle. Most people associate driving under the influence with alcohol; however, many other drugs alone or mixed with alcohol can severely affect your ability to operate a vehicle.
The course Officer Challis attended was hosted by the International Association of Chiefs of Police with support from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of the U.S. Department of Transportation. Some of the topics in this course include horizontal gaze nystagmus (HGN), the seven drug categories, and physiological body responses to these types of drugs. He spent 80 hours in the classroom and then 2 months in the field with actual test subjects. He is one of only 310 DREs in the state of Texas and one of four in the Brazos County.
Office William Challis has been with the Bryan Police Department for 3 ½ years. He started on patrol and transferred to the Traffic Safety Unit in May of 2009. His new certification will assist other officers in the field and allow him to excel at his job in traffic safety and DWI enforcement.
