The Board of Directors of Bryan Texas Utilities (BTU) voted to extend a rate-reduction measure, which was originally set to expire at the end of May. The reduction of the power supply adjustment by one-half will result in an approximate 15% reduction in electric costs for customers.
The Phillips Event Center is now owned by the City of Bryan, after the Bryan City Council accepted the property as a donation from Wallace Phillips of the 1980 Phillips Group, LCC, at their May 18, 2020 meeting.
The donation of the Phillips Event Center includes 7.27 acres of land, six tennis courts, a swimming pool, two auxiliary buildings and a 26,500-square-foot clubhouse. The clubhouse consists of the Quarry Bar & Grill, an outdoor porch, wrap-around balcony, kitchens, banquet/meeting space and office areas.
The Council also unanimously approved the purchase of three tracts of land adjacent to the donated property and the City Course at the Phillips Event Center. The purchased property provides a buffer between existing commercial and residential property and allows the driving range to return to its full size.
With the property that Phillips donated in 2017 (The City Course at the Phillips Event Center) and 2020 combined with the City purchased property in the same years, the Phillips Group has donated property appraised at nearly $11 million, while the City has invested just over $1 million. This benevolent donation ensures the City’s long-term use and control of a quality facility adjacent to the City Course and protects the property from being developed as another use.
“The City of Bryan is immensely thankful for Mr. Phillips’ extremely generous donation of property and amenities that will certainly complement the City Course at the Phillips Event Center,” said Bryan Mayor Andrew Nelson. “Combined with the amazing donation of the golf course property in 2017, Mr. Phillips is the most philanthropic individual in Bryan’s rich history.”
To ensure the continued operation, without interruption of services of the Phillips Event Center, the City Council also amended a management agreement with the Phillips Group to provide for daily operations and management of the Phillips Event Center property.
