Smoke Testing Begins Dec. 2 in Areas Around FM 1179 and Boonville Road

Starting Tuesday, Dec. 2, Water Services will be conducting intermittent smoke testing of sanitary sewer lines throughout December. The work is dry weather dependent and may be postponed due to rain.

Residents might see smoke coming from vent pipes on rooftops, manholes and the ground where broken sewer pipes may exist. The smoke is non-toxic, leaves no residue and does not create a fire hazard. It will not enter a house unless there is defective plumbing or dry drain traps. To prevent smoke from entering buildings, residents should pour about one gallon of water into seldom-used drains.

Smoke testing helps identify broken pipes and other defects by injecting smoke into the sewer lines through manholes. During this process, crews will enter properties to document the defects, but they will not enter private residences. You do not need to be home during the testing.
