Bryan City Cemetery spans nearly 67 acres and has served the community since 1868, three years before the city’s incorporation. It offers standard burial plots, columbaria, a veterans section and the Myrtie Conway Astin Memorial Chapel.

Veterans Section

The veterans section is reserved for veterans who died while on active duty or after honorable discharge, as well as their spouses. It was designed to mirror the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery format. Documentation of service or honorable discharge is required to purchase a plot.

The veterans section features several remembrance elements, including a donated granite memorial with medallions of the seven U.S. uniformed service branches: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Merchant Marine, Navy and Space Force. An eighth medallion honors prisoners of war and those missing in action (POW-MIA) on a VA-style marker engraved with “Unknown.”

The Old Bryan City Cemetery was the first public burial ground in Bryan, starting in 1861. It’s located on land originally owned by William Joel Bryan, the town’s namesake. Known as the Yellow Fever Cemetery – likely due to outbreaks in Brazos County in 1867 and 1873 – it was eventually replaced by the Bryan City Cemetery and Oakwood Cemetery.

City ordinances authorized its use for pauper burials, and few grave markers remain, including only one marked stone. Burial records reflect a diverse population, including immigrants and early settlers. While little is known about many of those buried here, the site represents the early history and heritage of Bryan and Brazos County.
