Heated Pool Allows Bryan Aquatic Center to Offer Spring Water Fitness Programs

There’s no need to wait until summer to get back in the pool! The Bryan Aquatic Center offers water fitness classes and lap swim sessions throughout the year, thanks to a heated pool kept around 82 degrees.

“It might seem wild to come to the pool during our colder months, but it’s actually really enjoyable,” said Aquatics Coordinator Hayden Johnson. “When you jump in on a pretty brisk day, it’s relieving and adrenaline-inducing at the same time.”

The City of Bryan Parks and Recreation Department provides the heated pool, plus heated locker rooms and hot showers, to offer the community a unique way of working out. Water fitness programs are low-impact, valuable for those who may not be able to put excessive strain on their joints.

“Water fitness makes exercise inclusive,” Johnson said. “It’s a great opportunity for people to step out of their comfort zone, try new things, meet new people and ultimately better themselves.”

While proficiency at floating in the water is recommended, a variety of flotation accessories are provided to allow all skill levels to take classes. The instructors are also able to tailor exercises to fit individual comfort levels.

Aqua Boot Camp

The newest aquatics program is a high-intensity, deep water workout designed to target the entire body, while remaining low-impact. Improve cardiovascular fitness, core strength, flexibility and range of motion through this program.

“It’s geared towards keeping heart rates high,” Johnson said. “We use resistance tools like flotation belts and barbells to help hit target burn zones.”

Aqua Boot Camp is offered to ages 18 and older on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7 – 7:45 a.m for $7 per class. Registration is not required, so show up and try it out! Learn more on the Pools and Aquatic Programs page.

Water Fit

Water Fit targets the same physical improvements as Aqua Boot Camp, but at a slower pace. It’s a popular program for all fitness levels.

“It’s a little more beginner-friendly,” Johnson said. “It’s not as intense or rigorous, and it’s a great way to get a good workout in.”

Water Fit’s spring season begins March 17 on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 – 6 p.m. for $7 per class for ages 18 and older. Registration is not required. An 8-pack option is also available for purchase online. Learn more on the Pools and Aquatic Programs page.

Family Fitness Swim

Focus on agility in the pool with Family Fitness Swim, a coach-led program to refine stroke techniques. Families are encouraged to swim together and the program is open to ages 9 and up.

“If the coaches see an issue, they offer tips and tricks to help you be more efficient in the water,” Johnson said.

Family Fitness Swim happens Mondays through Thursdays from 6 – 7:30 p.m. for $50 per person, paid monthly. The next session begins March 2. Learn more on the Pools and Aquatic Programs page.

Lap Swim

If you want to get in the pool but don’t want to take a class, the Bryan Aquatic Center offers several lap swim sessions for ages 14 and older on weekdays and one on Saturdays. Find hours on our Pools and Aquatic Programs page.
