More Playground Shade & New Amenities Approved for City of Bryan Parks

Two city playgrounds and a fitness area are getting new shade structures this year after the Bryan City Council approved a contract at the Tuesday, June 9 council meeting. The shade structures will enhance safety on hot Texas days and extend the life of existing equipment.

The contract was one of several parks-related items approved at the meeting, which also included approval of new playgrounds for Villa West Park and two restroom buildings for Travis Bryan Midtown Park.

New Shade Structures Approved

Shade structures will be added at three parks, with installation expected to be complete by the end of the summer:

  • Sue Haswell Memorial Park
    • Shade structure added over the playground.
    • Shade structure added over the adjacent swings.
  • Tanglewood Park
    • Shade structure added over the large, popular 5-12 age range playground.
  • Greenbrier Park
    • Shade structure added over the fitness equipment area.

City staff will continue to evaluate opportunities to add shade structures over other playgrounds and amenities, to provide further value and safety for Bryan.

New Playgrounds for Villa West Park

City Council also approved the purchase of two new playgrounds for Villa West Park: one designed for ages 2-5 and one designed for ages 5-12. The current playgrounds were installed in the early 2000s and have been well-loved and used by residents. The playgrounds have now surpassed their life expectancy and replacement parts are obsolete.

The new playgrounds are expected to be complete by the end of the year. Yes, shade structures are included!

Restrooms for Travis Bryan Midtown Park

Additionally, City Council approved a contract for the purchase and installation of two pre-fabricated restroom facilities for Travis Bryan Midtown Park.

A four-unit family restroom will be installed next to the soon-to-be-built Midtown Legacy Park playground, and a two-unit family restroom will be installed in the northwest corner of the park along the perimeter trail.

The goal is to have both restrooms operational by the playground grand opening in early 2027, further enhancing the playground experience for families.
