Mumford Road Reconstruction Project Complete, Improving Safety & Access
The City of Bryan recently completed its Mumford Road Reconstruction Project, a multi-year project that transformed the narrow rural road into a modern, safer street built to support the nearby industrial businesses that help drive Bryan’s economy.
The reconstructed road spans about 1.3 miles from a newly-installed traffic signal at FM 2818 (Harvey Mitchell Parkway) to just past Carrier Lane. The old 22-foot-wide open ditch roadway was removed and replaced with a 38-foot-wide curbed road with a new bridge and significant drainage improvements. The road was realigned to meet current road design standards and features two 12-foot-wide drive lanes and a 14-foot-wide continuous center turn lane. These improvements allow Mumford Road to properly support the rapidly-developing area by carrying heavier traffic and runoff the old road was not equipped to handle.
The reconstruction and new traffic signal also enhance public safety for industrial traffic and the students and faculty at Bryan ISD’s Career and Technology Campus. Enhancing public safety is a key component of improving quality of life for Bryan residents, which is a central focus of the Bryan City Council and city staff.
Construction cost $7.2 million, funded in part by a $1.6 million grant the city received from the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA). The remainder of the project cost was split by the City of Bryan and the Bryan-Brazos County Economic Development Foundation.
The city was awarded the EDA grant specifically for road improvements to support manufacturing business expansion, which the city’s economic development team has delivered through several recent projects. Large developments are a win for Bryan residents, as each project brings new jobs and provides increased tax revenue to help fund key city services.
Along the reconstructed portion of the road, the new Amazon Delivery Station processes more than 13,000 packages a day, with potential to double that capacity. Additionally, a 370,000-square-foot Master Brick factory is nearly complete at the FM 2818 intersection and construction is underway on a CertainTeed roofing manufacturing and distribution facility further down the road. Finally, Axis Pipe & Tube will soon begin a $110 million expansion project just north of Lake Bryan.
The Mumford Road Reconstruction Project is one of several Capital Improvement Projects, or CIPs, the city is completing this year. Learn about other projects on our CIP webpage.
