City of Bryan’s Statement on Fire Engine Status and Emergency Coverage

The City of Bryan is aware of a message posted by the Bryan Firefighters Association that claims the engine assigned to Station 5 is out of service, that no reserve engines are available, and that the community is facing reduced fire protection. These statements are misleading and irresponsible possibly leading citizens to be unjustly concerned. The engine assigned to Station 5 was repaired and returned to service in 54 minutes. Fire and EMS coverage across the city remains continuous and was never a concern today.

The facts: The city has eight engines, with three of those serving as reserves. The city has two ladder trucks. The city has 8 medics, with three of those serving as reserves. Plus, the city has other vehicles in the Fire Department for specific uses that could be used for coverage of various types. Additionally, the city has an agreement with Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service (TEEX) that provides access to two fire engines to ensure uninterrupted coverage during maintenance or repairs.

Public safety and response to citizens needs are paramount and are not dependent on any one vehicle being out of service.

The fire chief ensures each station in the community has appropriate staffing for both personnel and vehicles, regardless of illnesses, vehicle breakdowns, etc. Furthermore, Bryan firefighters and dispatch staff are trained to adapt quickly, and our strong mutual partnerships ensure the community has never been without emergency protection.

The City of Bryan remains committed to transparency, data-informed decisions, and providing high-quality public safety and emergency services.
