Celebrating Bryan’s Solid Waste Department
With more than 28,000 residential and 1,900 commercial customers to serve each week, the City of Bryan’s Solid Waste Department works hard all year to keep our community clean, safe and beautiful. June 12-18, 2022 is Waste & Recycling Workers Week, which is a time for us to come together to show our appreciation for the men and women in the waste management industry.
The Solid Waste Department is made up of Residential and Commercial Solid Waste Collection, Brush & Bulky Collection, Used Oil and Tire Recycling and the Public Works Call Center. Forty-five employees support the department, handling daily trash and brush & bulky collection, fielding phone calls and manning the DIY Used Oil & Tire Recycling Center. These are essential services that keep the Bryan community safe and healthy.
So, just how much waste and recycling do they handle?
- Annually, Solid Waste collects about 61,000 tons of waste from residential and commercial customers, which is disposed of at the landfill.
- On average, residential drivers conduct between 900 and 1,100 stops per day, while collecting over 480 tons of waste per week.
- Commercial collection operates seven days a week, with six routes starting as early as 4 a.m. to avoid traffic congestion. Commercial Services averages 520 tons of waste per week.
- Street sweepers have 41 routes throughout the city to help keep roadways free of litter and debris.
- Brush & Bulky crews operate 8 routes each day, collecting more than 75 tons of brush and 199 tons of bulky items per week.
- The City’s DIY Used Oil and Tire Recycling Center recycles about 24,000 tires and 5,000 gallons of used oil each year.
