Rumor Control: Police Department budget

Has the Bryan Police Department been “defunded”?

No. The Bryan City Council has a long history of supporting the Bryan Police Department (BPD) and has funded every budget request made in the last 13 years, since current Police Chief Buske has led the department.

Facts:

  • BPD has the largest departmental budget in the city’s general fund at $24,813,400 in Fiscal Year 2023. This is a 3.3% increase from its FY 2022 budget.
  • All budgetary requests made by BPD for the FY 2023 budget year were fully funded by the Bryan City Council.
  • While other departments may have a larger percentage increase in their budgets for FY 2023, these are primarily due to large one-time capital purchases. BPD did not have additional large capital purchases in FY 2023.
  • This year, 87% of property and sales taxes collected by the City of Bryan were used to fund public safety.

Residents are encouraged to participate in the budget process each year, and the City of Bryan’s proposed budgets are posted online for public viewing.

Anyone with questions may contact the City of Bryan’s Fiscal Services department via email or by calling 979.209.5080.
