Have you ever considered becoming a lifeguard, but don’t know where to start or what it takes?
The Bryan Parks & Recreation Department is hosting lifeguard hiring events for ages 16+ on Wednesday, May 8, and Thursday, May 9, from 4 – 5:30 p.m. at the Bryan Aquatic Center.
These free, come-and-go events will provide prospective applicants with the opportunity to talk with staff, apply, swim the skills test, and interview.
The pre-course swimming skills test includes:
- Swimming 150 yards, treading water for two minutes using legs only, and swimming an additional 50 yards.
- Swimming 20 yards, retrieving a 10-pound brick from a 10-foot depth, swimming back 20 yards, and climbing out of the pool without using a ladder or steps within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
Not already a certified lifeguard? Don’t let that stop you! You can register for a certification course during the event as well. Those hired will get their certification costs reimbursed at the end of the season.
Pay starts at $12 per hour, and returning lifeguards are eligible for a $0.50 raise each season.
Participants should come prepared to enter the water by bringing a swim suit and a towel. One-piece swimsuits preferred for females.
